A year before its twenty-fifth anniversary, Gente de Teatro is proud to announce the premiere of Madenusa by the Argentine playwright Claudia Soroka. While serving as a mirror of Fernández Tiscornia’s Made in Argentina, presented to the public in 2011, Soroka’s play also underscores multiple facets of the immigrant community. See it this Saturday, May 4th, at Rice University’s Hamman Hall.
In an attempt to restart a life that had been interrupted, Mabel and Osvaldo, long-time residents of the USA, have invited friends to come from Argentina for a visit. What happens when the world one left behind is suddenly back? The play evokes time and time again the dilemma of those who left as well as the impact of their decision on the ones who stayed behind.
Claudia Soroka was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina and emigrated to the U.S. in 1982. In 1985, she attended a performance of Nelly Fernández Tiscornia’s Made in Argentina, a play that significantly influenced the start of her artistic career while pointing out the cultural imperative to bring Latin American theater works to Houston. In 1995, after years of theatrical involvement, she co-founded Gente de Teatro, a group whose mission is to make Latin American and Spanish plays more widely known in the original. In 2011, Gente de Teatro staged Made in Argentina, and Soroka reached a landmark of her acting career by performing in the play that had been her original inspiration.
Soon after that, Soroka embarked on her next challenge: playwrighting, and the result of such endeavor is Madenusa. Not necessarily autobiographical, the play does, however, reflect the vicissitudes of leaving one’s old life behind and adapting to a totally new one. Such was the creative impulse for Madenusa that will run in Houston now through May 5th.
Admission to see Madenusa is $25. Discounted tickets are available to members, seniors, and students. Please note that children aged 5 and under are not allowed to attend the production. Don’t forget to stick around after the show for a special question and answer session with the playwright!
