One of the best parts of Halloween – other than loads of your favorite candy and cool costumes – is getting your scary movie fix. Sure, scary movies are always great to watch, despite the season, but there’s really a no better time to enjoy them than now when the chiller temperatures and fall foliage set in. Not to mention, this Halloween will be a bit different than previous years, with the ever-looming presence of COVID-19. So, if you had to cancel your annual Halloween party and are forgoing trick-or-treating altogether, a movie night might just be the way to keep your spirits high during the holiday. Check out our list below of the best scary and silly streamable movies, available on Netflix, HBO Max, and Disney+, that are ideal for all things Halloween!
Poltergeist, 1982 (Netflix)
When a series of movies is thought to be surrounded by a curse, like 1982’s supernatural horror film, Poltergeist, then it’s certainly one you should consider adding to your streaming list on Halloween. Written and produced by the great Steven Spielberg, Poltergeist tells the story of the Freeling family, who live in a quaint California suburb with their children, Dana, Robbie, and Carole Ann. The beginning of the film illustrates the Freeling’s are a normal, fun-loving family, going through the ups-and-downs of life – well until their home is invaded by malevolent ghosts that abduct Carol Anne. The rest of the plot surrounds the remaining members of Freeling’s attempting to bring her back into the real world.
Doctor Sleep, 2019 (HBO Max)
Are you obsessed with Stanley Kubrick’s 1980’s horror movie, The Shining? Well, then Doctor Sleep, a prequel to The Shining that was released last year, might be right up your alley. Written by none other than the untouchable Stephen King, Doctor Sleep tells the story of Dan Torrence, who is now a grown man struggling with alcoholism. Dan is haunted by the sinister events that took place at the Overlook Hotel when he was a child, and his hope for a peaceful existence is shattered when he meets Abra. The young teenager shares his extrasensory gift of the “shine.” Together, they form an unlikely alliance to battle the True Knot, a cult of members who feed off the shine of innocents to become immortal.
Hocus Pocus, 1993 (Disney+)
Over the past decade, Hocus Pocus has grown from Disney fame into a worldwide phenomenon, and it is now considered the quintessential Halloween flick – even though it’s mild in terms of scares. Starring Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy, and Sarah Jessica Parker as the comedic Sanderson sister trio, Hocus Pocus unfolds on Halloween in modern-day Salem, Massachusetts. Even though the town had rid themselves of the evil presence of the sisters 300 years prior, they are unsuspectedly resurrected by a Los Angeles native named Max Dennison, his sister Dani, and his crush, Allison. Once Max lights the Black Flame Candle, he must work with the two girls and Thackery Binx to put them to rest once and for all.
